I’m a nerd when it comes to knowing tidbits of fact about everything musically involved. I was listening to Nick Drake’s Pink Moon album (absolutely by far one of my all-time favorite albums, don’t get me started) and I decided to wikipedia his ass up. Apparently throughout his lifetime he struggled with bouts of depression and was was barely acclaimed as an artist during his time. This was because in his earlier work, folk crowds weren’t used to intently listening to shows that didn’t contain an established song structure (verse 1, chorus, verse 2, bridge, etc.), not to mention his various tunings he used in his songs, which he would have to awkwardly re-tune his guitar between songs. This was a major factor in his reluctance to play live shows or perform in front of crowds. When he was about 20, he landed a record deal 9 months before graduating college. He quit school to begin focusing his attention on music. 6 years later, after the release of Pink Moon, Drake moved in with his parents and OD’d on his depression meds. It wasn’t until 2000 when his song was in a commercial that he sold more copies in the following month than his entire lifetime.. What a fucking waste man. Now, Drake is considered one of the 50 most influential singer-songwriting composers of the 20th century. Call me a pussy but if you understood how pretty his music is and how disheartening it is to know that he could have gone on to at least know of his success.. That’s really all he ever wanted. One of his goals as a musician was to hope that through his music he could help people, like a minister, persay. He lived a short life with little success with insomnia and depression not far behind on his list of fuck-me-overs. Man, imagine being so passionate about something that you spend your whole life on it, making music THIS beautiful, unrecognized, only to die sad and alone in your parents’ house. I wish he knew what an impact he went on to have on music. 23,000,000+ scobbles on last.fm isn’t half bad for a 7ft tall mutherfucker from the UK.
